Aesthetics meets efficiency

On the road to Sint-Martens-Latem in Belgium, the newly built Parcado Residence is a real eye-catcher. Upon closer inspection you will notice that there is more to its sleek roof than meets the eye – it largely consists of in-roof photovoltaic panels.

No banalities

The apartment building offers five spacious residential units averaging 120 m2 and on the ground floor, Roland’s butcher and caterer took up residence, a provider of high-quality products for customers in the region.

For the design of the residence, G-Label approached the renowned Project Architects. “As an architectural firm, we want to offer residents or users a high-quality living or working experience, but also create added value for the environment. We don’t want to put down banal constructions,” explains engineer-architect Benoit Callens.

Gabled roof as a prerequisite

One of the biggest hurdles in this building project reared its head even before a spade was put in the ground, Callens points out: “We had provided a plan for flat roof with solar panels here. But the local administration wanted the building to fit in with the streetscape and thus have a classic, rural design, with a gabled roof.”

Francis Geernaert from Ghent G-Label goes on: “Although the roof offered space to install enough solar panels out of sight to achieve the required energy level, we wanted to do better. The caterer-butcher also wanted to generate as much solar energy as possible to power his refrigeration equipment.“

State of the art in-roof solution

Both G-Label and Project Architects were searching for a solution that was discreet and high performance. When Fabian Humphrey, account manager at wienerberger, dropped by Francis Geernaert with Wevolt X-Roof. “Our interest was piqued,” says the latter.

Benoit Callens: “To be honest, I was a bit hesitant at first. Previous roof-integrated solar panels from other manufacturers had not yet convinced me. Usually they were too small, achieved too little efficiency and were not aesthetic. But when I saw Wevolt X-Roof, those objections melted away like snow in the sun.” Francis Geernaert confirms: “In projects, you have to think ecologically and aesthetically. If you put the two together, you get Wevolt.”

With the Wevolt X-Roof, Koramic Plato Anthracite matt roof tiles, Terca Domus Casa Lena facing bricks and Trendline Retro Atlas clay pavers, wienerberger has a strong presence in Parcado Residence. In addition, the electrical installer used Preflex pre-wired pipes, another brand from wienerberger’s portfolio.
