Wienerberger Brick Award 2018: shortlist announced!

Brick Award

The shortlist of the 50 projects selected for the Brick Award 2018 is out now. Nearly 600 projects from 44 different countries have been submitted. The winners will be announced during the award ceremony in May 2018!

Vienna, 10th November 2017. The Wienerberger Brick Award, which was first initiated in 2004, is a biannual architectural award that is granted to outstanding examples of modern and innovative brick architecture. In 2018, Wienerberger will present this internationally established award for the eighth time.

50 projects were nominated by a panel of architects and architecture journalists. Then it was up to the independent jury of five internationally renowned architects to select the category winners and the winner of the Grand Prize.

The official Brick Award ceremony will take place in Vienna in May 2018. The Brick18 book, incl. all 50 nominated projects will be published at the same time.

The Brick Award 18 Jury consists of:

  • Anne Kaestle, Duplex Architekten, Germany
  • Jonathan Sergison, Sergison Bates Architects, United Kingdom
  • Marc Mimram, Marc Mimram Architecture, France
  • Stephan Ferenczy, BEHF Corporate Architects, Austria
  • Vladimir Arsene, Westfourth Architecture, Romania

The selection of winners is entirely based on the expertise and opinion of the jury: Wienerberger has no say in the selection process. The jury gives special attention to the innovation level of the project in terms of how functionality, sustainability and energy efficiency are combined as well as architectural quality and the use of ceramic materials.

The award comprises five categories:

  • Feeling at home
  • Living together
  • Working together
  • Sharing public space
  • Building outside the box

The last category is aimed at innovative concepts and ways of utilizing brick, new construction technologies or the usage of custom-made bricks and new ornamentation in the project. Ceramic products have to play a significant role in the submitted project, ranging from clay blocks to facing bricks, clay tiles or clay pavers. The use of Wienerberger products is not a necessary condition for participation. Special attention is directed to how the project combines functionality, sustainability and energy efficiency.

The official Brick Award ceremony will take place in Vienna in May 2018. The Brick18 book, including all 50 nominated projects in the five categories will be published at the same time.
